UK Stocks and Shares and Investment tips
Top
of the Tips: Share Recommendations at 15 Feb 2008
Ones
to Buy
Unilever
Despite
trading at a relatively heady 15.7 times 2008 earnings,
Unilever is actually sitting at a discount to competitors
Nestle (17.5 times) and Danone (19.3 times). This means
it offers relatively good prospects, although growth could
slow with a consumer downturn this year. Buy, says The Independent.
Invensys
Engineering
company Invensys have had a rough few years. However, they
look to be turning the corner and shares perked up notably
recently with an announcement of above forecast third-quarter
results. Buy says The Telegraph.
Aviva
Aviva
is a well-run and geographically-diversified insurer, currently
trading at a discount to its embedded value. A strong yield
of over 6% is currently on offer, completing an attractive
package. Buy, says The Times.
Homeserve
The
domestic maintenance company "looks expensive"
but with a 20% growth forecast remains attractive, according
to The Telegraph, who recommend a buy.
BP
In
the news this week for announcing that they will be eliminating
5% of their global workforce, BP are also nearing the end
of a long repair and maintenance cycle in the US. The combination
of these two programmes should result in an upturn in the
company's profitability - meaning now is a good time to
buy. The Times.
Ones
to Avoid
Rolls
Royce
Rolls
Royce's £46bn order book isn't enough to provide protection
from a potential downturn and the order deferments and cancellations
that might go with it. Time to sell, reckons The Times.
Ladbrokes
Too
much red ink on its balance sheet combined with "unexciting"
2008 earnings mean that you should avoid Ladbrokes, according
to The Times.
Silverjet
Business
class airline Silverjet is certainly not making money at
present and may not be for up to two more years, according
to this week's slightly confused statements from its board.
Whatever the case, there's probably some more turbulence
to go through - fly away, recommends The Telegraph.
