UK Stocks and Shares and Investment tips
Top
of the Tips: Share Recommendations at 16 May 2008
Ones
to Buy
Diageo
Diageo
owns many of the UK's best-known brands of spirits. Although
it might eventually suffer in a downturn, it should weather
the storm much better than many, believes The Independent,
who rate the company a buy.
Royal
& Sun Alliance
The
insurance giant openly admits to passing on rate increases
to its customers but still manages to achieve a customer
retention rate of nearly 80% - not bad under any circumstances.
Buy now, recommends The Independent.
Playtech
The
online gaming specialist has made a killing in the internet
casino market over the last year - particularly thanks to
the popularity of online poker. With first-quarter revenues
almost 20% on the fourth quarter of last year, Playtech's
shares are now at 18 times 2008 earnings. However, that's
still a discount to its peers - so buy, says The Telegraph.
British
American Tobacco
It
may not be politically correct, but there is no denying
that cigarette companies will ride out any economic downturn
relatively unscathed. BAT is currently at a slight discount
to its rival Imperial - The Telegraph and The Independent
both rate the tobacco giant as a buy.
Ones
to Avoid
Lonmin
Lonmin
has been the victim of a problematic electricity supply
at its South African facility and has yet to publish updated
production estimates. The Telegraph believes you should
avoid the company's shares for now.
Next
The
fashion giant could become a victim of its own success over
the next three years, as it struggles to maintain sales
densities in its newly-expanded stores. Budget stores like
Primark could also be formidable foes. Steer clear, says
The Times.
RAB
Capital
Best
known to the general public as one of the biggest investors
in Northern Rock, RAB Capital has just issued a first-half
profits warning. The fund manager's shares immediately fell
by 15% and show no obvious sign of recovering. Avoid, says
The Times.
