UK Stocks and Shares and Investment tips
Top
of the Tips: Share Recommendations at 21 Dec 2007
Ones
to Buy
ITE
Group
Growth
may be slowing in western economies - but not so in the
former eastern bloc and many Asian countries. ITE Group
organises trade exhibitions in places like Russia and Uzbekistan
- countries that are experiencing aggressive growth and
are looking for new commercial partnerships to help them
do it. Good prospects, reckons the Mail on Sunday - buy.
Spice
Weirdly-named
Spice specialises in helping large companies reduce their
electricity usage while its engineering division helps maintain
the nation's water, gas and electricity infrastructures.
It seems to be good at its job, having announced a 44% increase
in pre-tax profits this year. Growth potential means it's
worth above-average for its sector - buy, suggests The Telegraph.
Oxford
Instruments
Oxford
University spin-off Oxford Instruments specialises in nanotechnology
- a kind of engineering on a molecular scale. Despite a
falling share price, its fortunes look promising with sales
up 9% and pre-tax profits of £3m - against last year's
loss. Buy and stick with it, suggests the Mail on Sunday.
Rank
Bingo
and Casino operator Rank is going through a sticky period.
Future success could be helped by the possible abolition
of VAT on Bingo and Rank still has several valuable casino
licences. It's a bit of a gamble, but buying now could pay
off, reckons The Times.
Ones
to Avoid
Benfield
Reinsurance
broker Benfield might profit from disaster, but doesn't
deserve its current premium over the rest of its sector
- especially now it's admitted that this year's profits
will be "marginally lower" than previously expected.
Sell now, recommends The Telegraph.
Wichford
Small-cap
commercial property company Wichford has recently written
down the value of its portfolio by £22.6m. The share
price has already fallen but looks likely to drop a little
more. Wait a little longer before buying, says The Times.
Woolworths
Woolworth's
shares are at rock-bottom at present - unsurprisingly given
their recent trading difficulties. Steer clear, suggests
the Sunday Telegraph.
