UK Stocks and Shares and Investment tips
Top
of the Tips: Share Recommendations at 23 May 2008
Ones
to Buy
Tesco
The
Tesco juggernaut continues to look unstoppable. This week
the supermarket giant announced a deal to buy 36 stores
in South Korea. Currently sitting at 15 times forward earnings
and benefiting from its growing geographical diversification,
Tesco looks cheap against its rivals. Buy, says The Telegraph.
Compass
Food
group Compass may be suffering like everybody else from
rising food prices, but it appears to be coping well. Furthermore,
future plans hold great potential for the company. Buy now,
recommends The Independent.
Tullow
Oil
It was
drinks all round this week as Tullow's announcement of a
new oil find in Africa resulted in a 24% rise in the share
price. Despite this, there is likely to be more to come
this year. Buy, says The Independent.
Diploma
Specialist
distribution company Diploma's strong margins and cashflow
have just resulted in a 35% boost to dividends. With more
acquisitions likely and a fairly modest price-earnings ratio,
prospects look good. Buy, says The Telegraph.
Serco
Giant
outsourcer Serco is one of the government's favourites and
benefits from a wide range of large, safe, public sector
contracts - such as looking after the UK's nuclear warheads.
With that in mind, it's hard to think of a better defensive
stock, according to The Independent - who rate Serco a buy.
Ones
to Avoid
Dimension
Data
Tech
company Dimension Data benefits from considerable emerging
market exposure - providing some explanation for its fairly
steep P/E ratio. However, it seems inevitable that it will
be hit by financial and telecoms slowdowns - so steer clear
for now, says The Times.
Enterprise
Inns
Enterprise
appears to be weathering the storm in the pub industry somewhat
better than some of its competitors - but its share price
has still tanked from a year high of 774.5p to its current
level below 500p. Things look set to get worse, rather than
better for this sector - sell, says The Independent.
