UK Stocks and Shares and Investment tips
Top
of the Tips: Share Recommendations at 6/4/2011
Ones
to Buy
Bunzl
This company is not a household name but you may well use
its services indirectly. Bunzl delivers all sorts of mundane
supplies – like cleaning products – to businesses
around the UK and in 22 other countries. A consistent good
performer, Questor in The Telegraph is recommending it as
a buy on temporary weakness.
Bloomsbury
Publishing
High-end publisher Bloomsbury has reported figures at the
top end of expectations, including a 9% rise in pre-tax
profits. Buy, says The Times.
Barratt
Developments
House builder Barratt bought lots of land during the recession
and is now building houses on it. All it needs for margins
to increase is for house prices to stay flat – a not
unreasonable expectation. The company is also trading at
a 50% discount to net asset value – a rather harsh
evaluation of the housing market's near-term future. Buy
Barratt, says The Telegraph.
Hays
Recruiter Hays now gets 60% of its net income from overseas
– so the lacklustre UK domestic jobs market is not
an overly-large problem for the company, which currently
boasts an attractive yield of 4.6%. Buy, says The Independent.
Ones to Avoid
Provident
Financial
Doorstep lender Provident Financial has again reported improved
pre-tax profits, resulting in its share price rising still
higher on the FTSE250 leaderboard. Despite this, a number
of hedge funds have taken major short positions against
the company and there are concerns over its possible lack
of capital. Dividend payouts for this year exceed capital
generation for the third year running. The Telegraph says
sell.
HMV
Group
His Master's Voice may still haunt the UK's high streets
but HMV continues to struggle and recently released its
fourth profit warning since September – that's almost
one a month. The Telegraph believes it is time to sell.
